Compare appliance age, repair cost, replacement cost, and recent repair history. The result is a decision aid—not a diagnosis or a guarantee that you should repair or replace the appliance.
How the Repair or Replace Calculator Works
The calculator combines three transparent factors: repair cost as a percentage of replacement cost, appliance age compared with a reference lifespan, and recent repair history. It does not use a hidden “AI score.”
The commonly cited 50% rule says replacement deserves stronger consideration when the repair reaches about half the cost of a comparable replacement. Age and condition still matter, so the result is intentionally phrased as guidance rather than a command.
For detailed repair-cost context, see the appliance repair cost guide or use the appliance repair cost estimator.
Source note: The 50% rule is based on current 2026 Angi repair-vs-replace guidance. Reference lifespan ranges use estimates cited by Consumer Reports from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), with dishwasher lifespan context from Consumer Reports. These are planning references, not predictions for a specific appliance.
Need a Real Repair Estimate Before Deciding?
The calculator is decision support, not a diagnosis. A provider still needs to identify the problem and give you the actual repair terms before you decide whether to repair or replace.
