If clothes are taking longer to dry, use this checker to separate common airflow, heating, load, and washer-extraction clues. It does not diagnose a failed part. It focuses on safe checks you can make without opening the dryer cabinet.

Only check an outside vent that is safely accessible.

Why Longer Drying Time Matters

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that clothes still being damp after a typical cycle, or drying taking longer than normal, can be a sign that the lint screen or exhaust duct is blocked. Restricted airflow can contribute to excessive heat buildup.

Dryer Vent Safety Basics

  • Clean the lint screen/filter every time you use the dryer.
  • Check that exhaust air is escaping from the outside vent while the dryer operates.
  • Keep the vent duct clear of lint and obstructions.
  • U.S. Fire Administration guidance recommends cleaning dryer vent ductwork every year.
  • Do not keep operating a dryer that smells burned, smokes, sparks, or has a suspected gas leak.

If the checker points to a dryer problem rather than the vent, see common dryer problems, the dryer repair cost guide, or request dryer repair.
